It's easy to be cynical when a new artist emerges so perfectly formed as Londoner Jimi Charles Moody. There's already rumours that JCM is the side-project of an already-established face on the UK scene, but we'll reserve any judgment, so long as the enigmatic crooner keeps coming up with the goods. New track, 'Other Man', shows off more of those Kwabs-y, ocean deep vocals we first encountered on 'Blue Honey', but there's more soulful grit at play here, particularly in the gnarled guitar riff and resonant beats; it's not a million miles off Plan B's more restrained, though no less brutally honest, output. Mystery status to one side, this is quite simply exquisite retro soul-pop. - DC
